There is a range of places to travel in this wonderful world of ours. Every so often a new destination becomes the new place to be., and that new destination is the Yucatan Peninsula. According to The Yucatan Times, there is so much to do there that a single trip is inadequate. The country landscape abounds with tropical features where you can do swimming, golfing, and other activities. With that in mind, here are the reasons to visit the Yucatan Peninsula.
Mayan Ruins
This is a place full of heritage that is best explored with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Chichen Itza is the most famous site, with its distinctive calendar, ball pool, and well-preserved strips of rock and columns, as well as its sacrificial cenote! The ruins of Tulum are very different and reflect a much more relaxed lifestyle, which is in abundance here, as well as being home to small Quati soldiers; medium-sized and quite playful rodents, little bigger than a squirrel.
If you prefer to get up close and personal and climb the structures, Coba is one of the only ruins, where this is possible, as climbing the steep steps, is gradually limited due to recent fatalities. Tip: choose an umbrella, it won’t rain but it will save you from heatstroke.
Diving and Snorkeling
The Mesoamerican reef system operates each from Isla Mujeres to the outskirts of Belize. Depending on the time of year you visit, there is a chance to swim with the largest fish in the sea, the mighty whale shark. For art aficionados, Isla Mujeres not only offers some of the best craft and street art stores, but also an underwater art museum in the form of over 500 pieces of human body art, in which corals can also grow and attach themselves, diluting the world.
Day of the Dead
The perfect time to observe such a place is when the locals are partying. It may seem strange to mark the death, but it is a time to remember and honor the lives of loved ones by holding vigils and erecting altars that reflect the lifespan of the deceased. Originally, the holiday was celebrated in the summer, but the date was changed after Spanish colonization and now coincides with Halloween, around October 31, only two Novembers. A traditional dance called La Vaqueria Yucateca, a mix of Spanish melodies and Mayan chants, begins with a shamanic blessing before skull-faced couples in traditional white dresses embroidered with flowers dance to the spot. If you feel like socializing, face painters can decorate your head with a glittering skull on the Las Catrinas floor.
Yucatan Cuisine
Most people will probably be familiar with tacos, fajitas, and burritos, but there are many other fantastic dishes to try in the Yucatan region.
